Ebike Frame Styles

As well as different power outputs and methods, ebikes come in a range of frame shapes and styles. Then to confuse you even more brands may refer to the same style of frame by a different name. In this quick guide we try to explain the variations.

Crossbar

ENGWE M20 - ebike black

This is the most common frame design it has been around for ever and once the penny farthing went out of fashion it was the dominant frame style for many, many years. So why redesign a classic.

Crossbar Frame Style

Step-Through Or Easy-Entry

This frame design removes the top crossbar and is the most practical frame design when you mount the bike. No more trying to swing your leg over. To compensate for the loss of the top bar and retain it’s rigidity the down tube is strengthened and usually a bigger cross=section. This also becomes a handy design space for the battery.

Some brands may refer to this design as an Open or a Low-step frame.

Step-through or Easy-Entry Frame Style

Trapeze

Emovement Thunder v4.2 eMTB biege ebike

This frame-style sits in between the crossbar and step through, it's a halfway house, it features a lower crossbar and offers riders the ability to step ‘over’ rather than through the frame and doesn't require such a big downtube as rigidity is retained by using the lower level crossbar.

Some brands may refer to this design as a Low-Standover frame.
